We had a lovely day in Antwerp last Friday. The cupcakes I wrote about previously was one of them and there were also other fun and interesting stuff. One of the most interesting things about Antwerp was the origin of the name "Antwerp". A friend of mine who had a guidebook told me the folklore about "Antwerp" and the following is the same story written in the wikipedia<\/a>. <\/p>\n

According to folklore<\/a>, and as celebrated by the statue<\/a> in front of the town hall<\/a>, the city got its name from a legend<\/a> involving a mythical giant<\/a> called Antigoon<\/em><\/a> who lived near the river Scheldt<\/a>. He exacted a toll from those crossing the river, and for those who refused, he severed one of their hands and threw it into the river Scheldt. Eventually, the giant was slain by a young hero named Brabo<\/em><\/a>, who cut off the giant's own hand and flung it into the river. Hence the name Antwerpen<\/em>, from Dutch<\/a>hand werpen<\/em>\u2014akin to Old English hand<\/em> and wearpan<\/em> (= to throw), which has changed to today's warp<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The above photo is the statue in front of the town hall. The young hero is throwing away the cut hands and the giant without a hand is laying down at the bottom. I hadn't seen anything like this statue before.<\/p>\n

However, there seems to be other theories which you can find in the wikipedia.<\/a><\/p>\n
